Some cool links

November 8, 2008

Yeah, I know, no photo again.  Sorry.  I was busy all day and all my photos are on my other computer (I’m writing this on my old ibook that I keep in the nursery).

Instead of photos, I am going to post some neat links I’ve found for online children’s books.  If you’re like me, you want to read to your child before naptime/bed time but you keep the room darkened.  And any light just amazes Princess right now, so it kind of defeats the purpose of reading her to sleep.  Plus, she sometimes gets too antsy right now to let me hold a book, her, keep her pacifier in her mouth, and her arms down so she doesn’t knock the pacifier out and wake herself up.  I swear – I need about 4 more arms.  Anyway, I found some nice sites that do free audiobooks of children’s books, so she still gets read to, but I don’t have to fuss with a book, etc.  It also leaves me free to go shhhhhhh when she gets whiny.  As she gets better at nap time, I would probably look at reading books from the computer myself, but this is an easier solution for now.

So here are the sites:

Storyline Online
Very neat concept here.  It’s done by the Screen Actors Guild, and each book is read by an actor. actress.  They film them reading it and also show animated illustrations from the actual book.  Most of these are well done and they have a selection of some nice books on a wide range of topics.  It’s also kind of neat to see some of the actors reading the books.  Only downside is the selection of books isn’t very large.

Storynory
This is a neat collection of classic and original stories.  The narrator is pretty good.  She does voices and everything for the stories.  My only complaint is that every story has a mini-advert for her site or her sponsors.  While I understand it, this gets old after a while.

Librivox
A neat site with all kinds of books, not just for children.  They use books in the public domain. I guess you can actually volunteer to read a book (maybe I’ll do that sometime for kicks).  Since they use volunteers, the narrators are good and not-so-good.  I am currently listening to The Secret Garden, which I haven’t read for a very long time.

I have some other sites bookmarked, but haven’t had a chance to check them out yet, so I’ll post them up here when I can review them.  Enjoy!
